Hello Folks!
Welcome to the VIRTUAL It’s All About Choices: An EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic training! We will be using Zoom. We will be learning together, so thanks in advance for your patience!
I will be sending pdfs of the manual, ppt handouts and practicum packet for your convenience.
This training is going to be PACKED: a LOT of material (like a grad school intro course delivered in six days or trying to drink from a fire hose). This will be like a language immersion course, so reading Getting Past Your Past and EMDR, Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures will familiarize you with the terms and concepts and really help you in the training. That said I realize with clinical and life demands, you may not be able to accomplish all of that before the training, so GPYP is a great “starter”. Once you receive it, I encourage you to take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the manual. Bottom line, if you take in 10% of the training, you’re ahead of the curve!
Humor and a relaxed atmosphere generally make learning easier, so please relax and have fun. Wear comfortable clothes. Be aware that examples and videos may be triggering for you. Please take care of yourself. I’ll try to remember to tell you to keep your “shields up,” but just in case, keep them up anyway! 🙂 If you need to get up and move around, please do!
Most folks do better if they focus on learning the concepts, developing an understanding of the purposes and flow of the procedures and protocols. There is ABSOLUTELY NO expectation of perfection or mastery! This is about learning to ride a tricycle or bicycle with training wheels this weekend. The scripts are there to help you, not to add pressure. Your facilitators will be there during and after the training to help you develop your skills during the 10 hours of consultation. You are welcome to do consultation with any of our staff.
There are three types of questions: 1) I’ll answer immediately because it clarifies a point or concept, 2) one that I’ll say that’s coming and if I don’t answer it then, please ask the question then, and 3) one that’s too complicated to answer during the training, but will be happy to discuss on a break. Please feel free to use the Question Chat at any time and I’ll respond when appropriate.
If anyone would like to volunteer to be the client in a demo session, I’m happy do to live processing. If you are interested, let me know and we can have a chat before the training. Also, if you would be willing to be recorded for a training video, please let me know.
The afternoon practice sessions are to do real work. You will each be client and clinician. We will be using Zoom breakouts so each dyad will be able to have privacy while processing and your facilitators and I will be able to provide coaching or answer questions when needed. In larger trainings, you will be randomly assigned. I suggest you start with something that’s about a 4-5 on the 0-10 SUD scale. Often it can be about the anxiety of learning a new skill and practicing it in a fish bowl. However, it can be something bigger, provided you have an external support network for after the training. I encourage folks to stay in touch with their “EMDR study buddies,” if possible, to continue to work together between training sessions. It’s great practice and free therapy!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email or text!
We’re going to have a great training!
